Advocacy Poster Assignment

Poster

Written Statement:

With this assignment, with all the work and time I lost to have it done, I want to transmit hardly to people that violence is a tragic thing. It’s terrible when someone is violated, especially women by their intimate partners. They get psychological problems and scared to go anywhere, do or say something. Violence just changes their lives.
Therefore, first, as Ms. Silverman asked to do, I searched about this topic and tried to find some important and less unknown facts. I looked in various sites and some of them didn't have the clear information I wanted and needed, so I asked for help, and then with a different but better vocabulary, I found some interesting information. I did a Word Document and worked on it, trying to put more attractive information.
Then, I wrote a statement saying what I think about this topic and what are my intent and my message to stop making this act happening, to make people think.
After, I did the brainstorming part. I had lots of ideas that I sketched and lots of slogans, ones more important than others. I also found some good pictures that I thought would make my poster good enough to transmit my message. I did my own definition about this topic too, but some of the words I took from another place because I thought they were important and attracted the attention of people to know better, and in a simple way, what violence is.
My next step was the thumbnails. With the brainstorming that was on my head, I drew some posters with a picture that had significance, and a slogan that had some important information. However, at first I didn’t have enough important information in them, but I found something later.
Therefore, with all this process, my roughs and analyze, I presented my first ideas to the class to get some more guide to know exactly what to do.
Then, with my best three thumbnails, I started to make a poster on the computer with the program Adobe Photoshop. I just chose one idea, one image and one powerful slogan. This poster had to attract attention and have information with power and that was quite new and interesting to others. So, I preferred to use Photoshop instead of Illustrator because I think it has more useful, interesting and nice tools. It is more magical than Illustrator. I used an image with a woman crying a little bit and with a scared face and a man with his hand/arm on her mouth, because it is a sad and tragic montage that attracts attention when someone looks. Also, it means that she can’t say a word. He violated her and now nobody can know about it. She’s just going to continue her life, but with psychological problems because that act affected her, and if she’s prohibited of tell anything to no one, it will make her life even harder.
The slogan I chose had important information and it was small enough to shock people. I thought of some other ideas, like 104 countries across the world have outlawed marital rape, but this idea is a positive and a good thing, and I wanted something terrible that could attract people. I wanted something to focus on at the first glance, so I decided to write that 15 Latin American countries allowed rapists to avoid prison by marrying their victims, because this is crazy. It shouldn't be happening.
Also, my poster had to follow a lot of points to be good enough to transmit the message. The colours I used were red and blue because they are strong tones that attract people to read it. The unity is important here too, because I tried to create one thing with all those things together, to make a message with some sense. Emphasis, typography and rhythm make the poster bright and with power showing a clear message. Contrast and balance are also shown. All of this makes the poster look kind of mysterious.
I liked to do this assignment. It was a long one that required a lot of work, but I learned some more important information about this topic that I didn't know. Also, I had fun while doing the poster.

App for Dance

Written explanation:

I used Adobe Photoshop to create this app for dance. I just want people to understand that by looking at this image on their phones, for example, they understand right away that the activity involves dance.
I just add to work the background and change the colour of these people. I used a new tool called Clone Stamp Tool. Also I made movement with the Smudge tool. It looks like they are moving, in this case dancing.
I used all these blue and black colours, because it is an app for the yearbook of our school and it always has the colour blue.
  I enjoyed doing this work.

Self-Portrait Assignment

Written Explanation:

In order to express myself, I made this self-portrait. I think it can show to everyone how I am. These simple typographic elements express that I am a happy person who smiles every day and who has long, wavy hair. It might show that I am shy too. The sentences also say something about what I do and what I like.
This black and white composition also might show that my head has information and letters all over the place, inside my brain. Sometimes I like to read too, that's why I have that kind of book on my hands.
This assignment made me have some fun while working with my personality, face and identity on the computer.

Random Album Cover

First Album

Second Album

  Written explanation:

I used the program Adobe Photoshop to do the albums. I also tried new tools, like the Patch Tool. It was a fun and nice assignment to do, because I like music and creating an album with a not familiar name was cool. I had to work the pictures hard, to make some sense with the title of the album. (It had to match the songs inside too.) The "Khagwal" album might express an idea of freedom and simplicity. That mere adult was a friendly person who walked in the roads and helped people. Also, as an Indian name, this person can be calm but his/her songs need to have rhythm, like the leaves moving with the wind in the nature. The other album shows that it might have a mysterious theme in all songs, because the image is a key in the inside of a book, and everything is gold.
This assignment was interesting for me and I liked to do it. I wish I have an album one day too.

Poster for the plays: "The Audition" and "The Twelve Angry Jurors"

This is the best poster because it has just four colours: white, yellow and black. I chose these colours because they are strong ones that look good on black and attracts people to look at it and go to the play. It was done in Adobe Photoshop. It shows emphasis and the lights help doing it. It also shows contrast. This play is called "The Audition" and is performed by students of the Young Company. I chose this photo of the students because I wanted to show that it is done by experienced teenagers who want to give people a good show and demonstrate their talent. The lights show that this is kind of a scary play but also attractive. Also the back stage light looks like its giving sound at the same time it is projecting light with colour. The size of the words mean that there's important information that needs to be projected in a bigger way than the smaller ones that are not really important. The title is the bigger one to attract people for what is the name of the play. The space between the sentences helps to understand better what is going on and this way don't mess up with the poster and lots of colours.

This poster shows the two plays: "The Audition" and "The Twelve Angry Jurors". However it is not so good as the first one, because it has lots of colours and the name of the second play is not well visible on the top of the chairs. This second play is a evil one and I chose the chairs because there are twelve jurors but one is different because is the most important one, the principal one that decides maybe when there's a tie between two teams. The colours I chose have the same meaning as I said in the first poster and the principles and elements of design too. However, here, in this poster, there is emphasis but not just on one point, so it's hard to understand what is going on and where to look first. The colours needed to be changed to the ones that are in the first poster.

I prefer the first poster because I worked hard on it and it is well organized, better than the second one. I used some special tools in Adobe Photoshop to do some special techniques, like the Magnetic Lasso Tool.

L.C.I. Young Company Logos

Logos with color:

Black and White Logos:

Written explanation:

For the logos with colour I thought about the principles and elements of design. To be a good logo, I can't write to much text.It has to be clear and show to people what it means exactly. It has line, shape, space, colour, balance, contrast. emphasis and movement. I used all of this because I wanted to show that Young Company is a group of students in grades 9 and 10 who do the Young Company plays. It is a fun and familiar company that we know in L.C.I. They also are professionals that try to do their best.
I used the girl on the top because this is a company of teenagers. I used the colour green because I wanted to emphasize the name of the logo. This colour is kind of calm, that expresses life and respect, balance, growth and freedom to pursue new ideas. I think this colour protects this logo. It shows that students of the Young Company want to show their ideas and they are free to share them. The black color is always used and it looks good with green (contrast). The leaf on the bottom has shows shape, line and space. Maybe movement too. I draw it because it helps to give comfort to the logo.
I am happy with this logos. I think they express what I wanted to. I could put more teenagers to help people understand the logo, but I didn't like the way I tried to put them.
I used the Pen Tool and the Paintbrush Tool. I didn't use any new tool.
For the Black and White logos, I just selected the parts of the layers and changed the colour to black, light or dark grey.

Explanation:
I chose these sites to show design, because they are daily things that we see. This means that we have design everywhere, every day. However, not good design if found everywhere. So, these sites have some examples of good design.
Beyond the good design of things in nature, we have inside our houses: the quality the furniture shows and how it was done, makes them look great, with design that everyone likes. Also, the disposition people give to the furniture they have at home, makes the difference. The frames they put on the walls also helps.

Vector Tracing

First Drawing: free hand trace of a tuba

Second Drawing: trace of a tuba

Third Drawing: trace of a tuba with color

Written explanation

a) Elements and Principles of Design:
All the three drawings that I did have line and shape. There is straight and curve lines most of the time. The shape is really well seen in all three drawings because of the forms they show with curve lines. There is no texture in my drawings. There is black colour in my third drawing. There is a lot of negative space in my first and second drawings. There is not positive space in these ones. However, in my third drawing there is positive space most of the time and few negative space. There is no balance between the two spaces. I also can see contrast in this third drawing because of the black and white colours. There is emphasis too. All the drawings have unity, the lines join together and form one object. There is not variety. Also I can't see rhythm in my drawings. There is no value.

b) Technical:
In the first drawing I did a free hand sketch of a tuba. But before I sketched it in a paper with a special pencil called "canté". Then I scanned it and on the computer with the program Adobe Illustrator, I started the trace of it. I used the Pen Tool. Also, I created a layer for each part of the trace of the tuba. I created 4 new layers. When I finished the trace of my free hand sketch, I exported my drawing as a PNG file.
In the second drawing I did a trace of a tuba. I started to create a new layer and lock the original layer of the image. Then, with the Pen Tool I traced all the curves, lines and small details. This process made me create 5 new layers. This way, if I had done something wrong, I could delete it and the other layers would stay in the same place. Tracing this image was the most difficult part because it had lots of details to trace. When I finished my tracing of the tuba, I exported the drawing as a PNG file.
In the third drawing, I opened the second drawing on the computer and started to put colour in the instrument. Like in the last drawings, I locked the original layer and created another one. Then with the Pen Tool and black colour I just had to fill the white space inside the tuba. To do this I created 14 more layers. At the end, my drawing looked like a shade. I also exported it as a PNG file.

c) My opinion:
The drawing I like best is the second one, because it took me a long time to get done and was really hard and confused to do. However, the final product was really nice and well done. I prefer this one to the others because the design is unique and has a lot of details. Also, this second drawing is the one that "works" as a good design because of its shape, line and volume. However, the one that isn't as effective is the first one because it looks like a rough copy.

Leaf guy

PNG

JPG

Explanation:

This was my first sketch and I think that the PNG image has better quality than the JPG one, because the last image is kind of foggy and we can't see it clearly, because of the bad quality.
