Advocacy Poster Assignment

Poster

Written Statement:

With this assignment, with all the work and time I lost to have it done, I want to transmit hardly to people that violence is a tragic thing. It’s terrible when someone is violated, especially women by their intimate partners. They get psychological problems and scared to go anywhere, do or say something. Violence just changes their lives.
Therefore, first, as Ms. Silverman asked to do, I searched about this topic and tried to find some important and less unknown facts. I looked in various sites and some of them didn't have the clear information I wanted and needed, so I asked for help, and then with a different but better vocabulary, I found some interesting information. I did a Word Document and worked on it, trying to put more attractive information.
Then, I wrote a statement saying what I think about this topic and what are my intent and my message to stop making this act happening, to make people think.
After, I did the brainstorming part. I had lots of ideas that I sketched and lots of slogans, ones more important than others. I also found some good pictures that I thought would make my poster good enough to transmit my message. I did my own definition about this topic too, but some of the words I took from another place because I thought they were important and attracted the attention of people to know better, and in a simple way, what violence is.
My next step was the thumbnails. With the brainstorming that was on my head, I drew some posters with a picture that had significance, and a slogan that had some important information. However, at first I didn’t have enough important information in them, but I found something later.
Therefore, with all this process, my roughs and analyze, I presented my first ideas to the class to get some more guide to know exactly what to do.
Then, with my best three thumbnails, I started to make a poster on the computer with the program Adobe Photoshop. I just chose one idea, one image and one powerful slogan. This poster had to attract attention and have information with power and that was quite new and interesting to others. So, I preferred to use Photoshop instead of Illustrator because I think it has more useful, interesting and nice tools. It is more magical than Illustrator. I used an image with a woman crying a little bit and with a scared face and a man with his hand/arm on her mouth, because it is a sad and tragic montage that attracts attention when someone looks. Also, it means that she can’t say a word. He violated her and now nobody can know about it. She’s just going to continue her life, but with psychological problems because that act affected her, and if she’s prohibited of tell anything to no one, it will make her life even harder.
The slogan I chose had important information and it was small enough to shock people. I thought of some other ideas, like 104 countries across the world have outlawed marital rape, but this idea is a positive and a good thing, and I wanted something terrible that could attract people. I wanted something to focus on at the first glance, so I decided to write that 15 Latin American countries allowed rapists to avoid prison by marrying their victims, because this is crazy. It shouldn't be happening.
Also, my poster had to follow a lot of points to be good enough to transmit the message. The colours I used were red and blue because they are strong tones that attract people to read it. The unity is important here too, because I tried to create one thing with all those things together, to make a message with some sense. Emphasis, typography and rhythm make the poster bright and with power showing a clear message. Contrast and balance are also shown. All of this makes the poster look kind of mysterious.
I liked to do this assignment. It was a long one that required a lot of work, but I learned some more important information about this topic that I didn't know. Also, I had fun while doing the poster.
